The Ancestral Puebloans
The Four Corners area of the Southwestern US is filled with ruins left behind by the ancestors to the modern day Pueblo peoples. Now occupied by both native tribes such as the Navajo or Dine', various Pueblo peoples as well as other native and non-native Americans, this area is filled with remains of cultures that existed and thrived in this area until the the mid 1300s. These include Chaco culture, the people that inhabited the Mesa Verde area and the Canyon de Chelly area. The Navajo (Dine') still live and work the land in the canyons that radiate out from Chinle, AZ, including Canyon de Chelly. These people built great dwellings and community centers that blend with the natural environments in the canyons and canyon walls so well that they are difficult to spot from a distance. The texture of the buildings, canyon walls, the canyon floor and quality of light in those magical places inspired me to create a series of images that convey a sense of timelessness and vastness of the space that surround human activity in these areas.
